چکیده

The geometric accuracy of the images acquired by the SEVIRI instrument aboard the European geostationary satellites MSG-1 and MSG-2 has been investigated in this study. Level 1.5 image data of the High-Resolution Visible (HRV) band with 1-km GSD and several multispectral bands with 3km GSD at sub-satellite point have been provided by the Swiss GCOS Office at MeteoSwiss. A set of fully automated processing methods has been adopted, developed and implemented for the evaluation of relative and absolute accuracy of the HRV images. For the evaluation of the relative accuracy, large numbers of feature points are extracted and tracked through images of the same day. To assess the absolute accuracy, lakes in the area are used as reference and matched automatically in the HRV images. A number of SEVIRI images acquired in 2008 have been analyzed and relative and absolute shifts of up to about 10 pixels have been observed.

Geometric Accuracy Investigations of SEVIRI High Resolution Visible (HRV) Level 1.5 Imagery

GCOS (Global Climate Observing System) is a long-term program for monitoring the climate, detecting the changes, and assessing their impacts. Remote sensing techniques are being increasingly used for climate-related measurements. Imagery of the SEVIRI instrument on board of the European geostationary satellites Meteosat-8 and Meteosat-9 are often used for the estimation of essential climate var...

Remote sensing of aerosols over the oceans using MSG/SEVIRI imagery

The SEVIRI instrument on board Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) offers new capabilities to monitor aerosol transport over the Atlantic and the Mediterranean at high temporal and spatial resolutions, in particular, Saharan dust from North Africa, biomass-burning aerosols from subtropical Africa and pollution from Europe. An inversion technique was developed to estimate both aerosol optical thick...

The Use of Msg-seviri for Rapid Detection of Security-related Events

New fields of application have been discovered for data acquired by geostationary satellite sensors, like MSG-SEVIRI (Meteosat Second Generation-Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager), beyond their original meteorological and climatologic scopes. Unexpected MSG-SEVIRI potentials have been, for instance, revealed in different security-related applications. In fact, several accidents (e.g...

Atmospheric Instability Parameters Derived from Msg Seviri Observations

Within the MSG Global Instability Index (GII) product, information on the static stability and other airmass parameters will be operationally derived and disseminated. The GII product should serve as a nowcasting tool to identify the potential of convection and possibly of severe storms in still preconvective conditions. The applied retrieval method makes use of six MSG SEVIRI thermal bands, an...
